2019 Sketch Sessions and Various Creative Experiments
This is a small sample of sketches and projects created throughout the previous year.
The first three projects presented were created in 20 minutes or so. It was literally nothing more than opening the SurfaceBook 2, booting up Rebelle 3 and drawing without much thought. Just working from how I felt at the time and seeing where it went. Time as taken later to finalize the second and third images.
As the title implies, this as well as the next three projects below were sketched using vectors in Affinity Designer on a SurfaceBook 2 and a Surface Studio. Vector art generally features really clean lines with smooth gradient blends and simplistic designs. But freehand drawing is very robust in Affinity Designer and inspired a series of really quick sketches, usually created from 2 minutes to 20 minutes. Even though the Pixel Persona within Affinity Designer is a bitmap creative section for freehand sketching and works incredibly well (with the exception that it doesn't support touch screen rotation), I found that the Design Persona is also really good for freehand sketching of ideas.
This sketch was originally created in 2017 using Clip Studio EX as a test of the Surface Studio. The original 2017 sketch was then imported into Affinity Designer and finalized as a vector graphic in 2019 which you can see below.
This is a project that started as a sketch using Krita on a Surface Pro 3 many years ago. It was imported into Affinity Designer in 2019 and finalized as a vector graphic.
This sketch was originally created in 2014 using ArtFlow for Android on a Google Nexus 7, 2013 version. The reason it's featured here is because the image below is based on this sketch and was completed as a vector graphic using Affinity Designer on a SurfaceBook 2 in 2019.
This drawing was created using the Pixel Persona in Affinity Designer on a SurfaceBook 2 which was mentioned earlier in this post. The drawing was used as a reference for the final vector output which you can see below.
This sketch was created in 4 minutes or so using ArtRage 6 soon after it debuted in 2019. The image was exported to Affinity Designer and turned into a vector based design and then modified again for the DR cover presented below.
This is a character design based on a friend I met living in the Netherlands that is featured throughout the site. This was also a test of ArtRage 6 on a Surface Studio as this was created soon after the latest version of the software debuted in 2019.
This is a rough character idea created using Sketchbook Pro Mobile on a SurfaceBook 2.
Another rough sketch of a character idea using Sketchbook Mobile on a SurfaceBook 2. I have mixed feelings about Sketchbook Mobile. It's great that it's free but the free version is not feature complete as Sketchbook Pro 7 which has animation functions and better file options.
Not a sketch admittedly, but this is the final project created using ArtRage 5 on a Surface Studio. This is an illustration idea for a short story that I've had in mind for some time and finally got around to visualizing a scene from it earlier in 2019.
